Some questions:

Hi Jukka,

We have been very busy again to prep our cars. I finally got my papers and my car is now officially on the road !! The first testdrive to Groningen (about 400 km) this weekend was a succes. Looking forward to next week.

It is good that because of this raid at least 40 more 2cvs will be again in top condition (hopefully).

Jukka

Hi Jukka ,

The Maps are very difficult to read Is it possible to do something about that and send them again .

I agree, but making the resolution higher will enlare the file size a lot and this is a problem with email to many recipents. At start you will get a little more detailed prints. Hopegfully you can compare this to the road map of Finland you have.

Jukka

Hi Jukka,

Do you have any idea about the size of you sponsor-stickers and the raid stickers... I need to keep some space for them on my Car....

Not really, but keep space for something like 4-5 normal-sized (40 x 10 cm for example) stickers.

Jukka

Have a good trip !! See me in the 2005 edition !!

OK, but unfortunately this is ment to be the last "Raid Laponie". I am sure there is nothing in 2005 and nobody knows about the future, but of course anyone can start organising winter raids for 2CV. We have done this ten times since 1986 and now it is time to think it over.

Please follow the diary on our webpages to take mentally part in the trip. http://www.sitruuna.com/raidlaponie/diary.html

Cheers,

Jukka

Hi Jukka,

Concerning the tires you've reserved for us; In a map on your website, I've read that we must change the tires at matti's garage. Is this the place where we can change our oil also? Do you have an exact address of this garage? Is Matti's garage near Helsinki, or do you recommend to change the tires on day 1 (05.02.2004). If possible we want to change oil and tires on 04.02.2004. Is it possible that we use the preparations form that you've send us, to
put it online at our website?

Matti´s garage is near Helsinki. Veikko can give the exact address. It is better if you have changed the oil (and tyres) before the start. It is possible at the garage one day before, I suppose.

If you mean the 2CV winter preparation instructions PDF, the answer is yes and no. You can put it on the website for your fellow 2CV friends to read, but we would not really like to distribute it all over for copyright reasons. There is a lot of work behind and we would like to keep the control over the usage of this information.

Cheers,

Jukka

I remember you both are professionals rescuers. I was wondering if you could bring with you some sort of basic first aid kit in case of accidents or other unexpected trouble. Of course national emergency services are available all over our route, but there can be a delay because of long distances.

We already planed to bring some basic and usefull first aid and resceu materials with us. We, ofcourse have a CB in the car and I'll give you also our mobile numbers, just in case some one needs help.

- phone Marcel vVerdult 00 31 611116566
- phone Erik Dammers 00 31 628548341
- registration plate (car) 24-HU-11
- team 32

To gif you an idea what we take with us; 1 profesional first aid kid, 2 resque ropes (60mtr. total), 2 extinguisers (2kg and 6kg dry powder), 1 towing strap and some other small thing wich we think are usefull. But ofcourse we hope we do not need them. but beter save than sorry.

Regards ERIK

Glad the info is of use. Regards engine oil you mention 5w40 and 0w30 oil both of which are not easy to get in the UK as it does not get cold enough. I believe 5w40 is available in Denmark so I could change the oil there and
use that for the raid or do you think it better to use the 0w30? If you recommend 0w30 is there a garage in Helsinki where we can change it as we will have a day there on the 4th? On the starter motor issue I have a Bosch 12v one. Do you have any idea how good they are in the cold? Again, the UK climate does not allow me to test them to the full. (Most of the ancillary changes to my 2CV are due to mud and water not cold!!)

Hello,

I myself never used 0W oils, but some other people did and there is no problem using it in any weather.

I think one should be able to change the oil in Helsinki, I forward this to Veikko who lives in the area. You can also come to Vaasa if you like
(and stay in our house and use the garage).

Bosch starters should be OK. Iskra and Femsa probably not.

Jukka

Spare parts

Michael and I bring a box full of small regular spare parts we always carry with us (points, spark plugs, wipers, brake pads, cables, fan belt, oil filter, .....) , plus the following used parts:
- 2 complete axles (driveshafts)
- 2 complete fans
- 1 hydraulic scissor type jack
- 2 spare studded tyres (new)
- 2 spare winter tires (we might want to let all our non studded winter tires in Helsinki)
- 1 grease pump
- 2 6 Volt starters
- 2 spare generators

If I manage to get it fixed, I will bring an engine (only the essentials wthout all the tin and covers) and a disk gear box (without brakes).

So much for now,
Greetings
Karsten

I will let the others know about your spares in FAQ in the webpage. Of course people should not count on others alone, but it is not wise that everyone carries the same stuff and weight.

Jukka

Just a quick question. Are there ay special documents we need personal, vehicle or otherwise that we need for the Raid. In the UK we drive without carrying anything so I need to dig whatever out. Car preparations slowed down today as I put drill mishap left me with 4 stitches in my hand. Luckily they come out 3 days before we leave the UK.

Good point, will add this in our next infoletter. You need your driver´s lisence, car registration documents and the passport (Norway is not in the EU). Papeers for travel insurance also, if you have one. Perhaps also some paper for your nose, if you catch cold. Be careful with those machines...
It is very icy and slippery here, but not too cold (yet).

Jukka

Thanks for the last email and info. I will have a few tools with me which are not standard and also some equipment which my be of use. These are,

- 32mm socket and T bar for driveshaft outer nuts
- 8mm manual wire winch with wire and tree straps
- 20m recoil (kinnetic) rope with shackles (Good Tow Points necessary or a tree strap has to go round an arm.)
- Hand held GPS
- Spare suspension rods/ rod eyes and pins
- Reinforced driveshaft middle gaiters.
- Various legths of fuel pipe.

The usual tool box. I can email you a full list when I repack the car next week.

Ps. This is just the usual stuff the 4x4 has in it when we go playing in the mud.!!

Thanks for the information. We will put this in the FAQ section in the webpage for everyone to read.

Jukka

Just a final quick question. When off road we have found the 2CV jack sinks when changing a wheel. Is there any modification or baseplate you find necessary in Finland to seal with the Jack slipping on ice or is it not a problem?

Good point, one should be much more careful than usually. I seldom use the original jack, but a small bottle type hydraulic jack and in wintertime I sometime place a piece of wood or metal under the jack to prevent sinking and slipping.

I willalso bring a small hydraulic garage jack with me.

Jukka

This may be of use for some teams.

I found out from Castrol Technical Automotive that Castrol do a gearbox oil called SMX/S that is rated for below -40c. They also do a grease (available in 400mm cartridges as well as tubs) called LMX which is rated for -30 to 40 use. In the UK it is available thru Castrol Classic oils on (+44) 01954 231 668. The gearbox oil is synthetic so the 2CV synchromesh may not like it but I filled my boxes with it today and can let you know if I encounter any problems with it. (It will be fine for the rear box tho as the synchro is not really used and as the box gets no heat it needs something that can handle the cold. If this is of use stick it on the FAQ.

Yes, this will go for the FAQ.

Jukka

Dear Jukka, thanks for the info, we got it allright. Next sunday we will have someone from a local newspaper, interviewing our teams and making photo's. We have a few sponsors of our own who will sponsor some petrol or small amount of money. In return we will carry some stickers on our cars. Are the any BIG stickers we will have to put on in Finland? like the BIG totalsticker we had last time? I know the size of the yellow automeca sticker and i will reserve a place for it. Is it possible NOT to change our teamnumbers? we made a copy of the teamnumberstickers from last time and they are allready on. Greeting from
rainy en warm (+8ºC) holland. alfred sf team21

OK, we will keep at least your teamnumber the same.
There will be some sponsor stickers from the organisers, but I do not know the sizes. Also the big round Raid Sticker for the doors or any place.
Please, bring copies of those newspaper articles for our files.

Greetings from cold Finland -10...-20C.

Jukka

On a dutch site (www.raid.2cv6.com), it was mentioned this 10th raid will be the last one... However, on your site - the official one - I did not find any reference about this. Can you confirm what is correct?

The same organising team has organised now 10 Raid Laponies starting from 1986. After every raid we have been automatically ready to organise a next one after two years. This time we have agreed in advance that there is no automatic continuance and the 10th Raid Laponie is therefore ment to be the last one.

But nobody knows about the winters in the future and whoever is free to organise another raid again (but not as "Raid Laponie" without our permission).

It has been a lot of fun participating these raids, but also a lot of work of organising and now a break for breathing is needed.

But first, let's make the 10th one unforgettable.

Jukka

PS. There is now space for one more team.

I hope this raid will be the raid oif the polar lights. At least they say the sun has been quite active recently. Here is another super great site with pictures:

http://www.polarimage.fi/

Perhaps you want to share it with the other raiders when you send the next newsletter or on the homepage.

Daily guess of the raid participation chance: My chance to participate has been determinded to be 82 % today, tendency: raising. ;-)

Strawberrix is almost ready. I leave the 650 cc hybrid engine (2CV carburator, crankshaft and housing) in my 2CV, it survived +40 °C; let's see if it survives -40°C too! Do you drive with a visa engine?

Good idea. We will also send our polar light info (made for the 2002 raid to all the participants).

I drive also 652, but it is just the pistons and bored barrels (very thin), but it has run for more than 100.000 km ok.

Jukka

In your preparation sheet you mention making double glazing with perspex and silicone. Could you send me some more information on how to do this as I have a building supplier nearby with many off cut sheets.

Use a electric saw to to cut a piece of thin perplex/acryl to the form of a side window. The piece should be a little smaller than the window so that you can glue the piece between the rubber sealings (or metal frames in the front). Apply some silicon sealant as glue to the edges of the cutted piece and gently press it on the inside of the window so that some insulating air is left in between the glazing. The work is easier to do if the door is removed and horozontal (but not necessarily).

Before mounting, drill some small holes near the edges of the cutted piece. These are later needed for ventilation when you have to get rid of the moisture that always somehow finds its way in between the glazing. You can keep the holes plugged (with a clear tape for example) until you can see some mist inside.

See the attached image, too.

Just had a word with my co-driver this morning and we were wondering if the raid finishes at Oulunsalo or if there is anything happening at Helsinki on the evening of the 15th. Is the last day a rust to the ferry for if so then we would probably go back via Sweden as it would save a crossing and we wouldn't have to rush quite so much.

Nothing especially organised in Helsinki that evening. Many teams are in a hurry to the boats. If you like, you can also stay at our place in Vaasa (there is the ferry Vaasa-Umea too, www.rgline.fi ). Also we are still looking for an overnight spot in Kemi instead of Oulunsalo.

Winter Tyres: Do we need winter tyres to drive through Sweden and Denmark? In that case we´ll try to get the ferry in Germany, because we don´t have winter tyres in south Spain.

Winter tyres can be needed in Denmark or Sweden, even in Germany if you are unlucky. Did you get the offer of Superfast Ferries I sent out yesterday,it might suit you.

Timetable: I have understood that we have to be in Helsinki on the evening of the 4th. for a briefing and a chance to meet the others before we set off, but I was a little concerned about the coming home date as it was not fixed .

It is of course more relaxing if you arrive a day or two before the start, but te first official get-together is 5th Feb in the morning in Helsinki. You can also start from Vaasa with me and some others.

2CV preparation: Do you advice us to put the covering for the oil cooler in Finland only?

IF YOU HAVE AN OIL THERMOMETER, YOU CAN CONTROL THE HEAT. NORMALLY YOU CAN COVER THE COOLER ALREADY IN + 5. IF YOU MAKE A THIN PLASTIC PLATE THAT CAN BE SLIDED BEHIND THE COOLER, IT CAN BE EASILY REMOVED/REMOUNTED
ANYTIME.

Spike tyres : are they allowed in Switzerland and Germany ? we will ask this to German people ...

I THINK NOT IN GERMANY.

Motor : Do you think it is necessary to protect it with a piece of metal (good to insulate under carter, but not as good if we need to heat the oil, as I could read on papers about last raids - on Lorraine web site ).

IT IS A GOOD IDEA ANYWAY, BECAUSE IF THERE IS NO PLATE, THE ENGINE CANNOT HEAT PROPERLY UP. TRY MAKING A REMOVABLE PLATE, IT DOES NOT HAVE
TO BE METAL ALWAYS.

Electricity : do you have the same plugs for 220 v in finland than in France ?

YES, I THINK SO.

Participation fee : any news of our money, lost on the way for Finland ?

VEIKKO KNOWS ABOUT IT. LAST TIME I SPOKE WITH HIM IT HAS NOT ARRIVED.

We will bring you special spirit of the Alps. We should bring special food of our country, and organize an evening
of degustation with all teams. I'm sure it is already made !

A EVENING OF DEGUSTATION IS A VERY GOOD IDEA.

Hi team34!

Some years ago spikes in 1000-piece boxes were available in Austria. There were different lengths (11, 12, 13, 14, ... mm) and different shapes available (single flange, double flange). But I don' know where to buy it now. There are also plastic spikes available, with a metal in the middle, but I have no experience with this modern type.

For the MS 89 it is best to use double flange spikes, with a length, that the spike sticks out 2mm. (This is a little bit against the laws, but very effective! - Spikes tyres according to current regulations I call "homeopatic spikes"....)

I mounted the spikes myself. For this I took pointed pliers, which I shaped (with a flex) inside holow to grip a spike, and outside round. Then I simple put in all the spikes. It's a lot of work, but possible. I used liquid soap as grease to make it easier.

It is also possible to renew spikes tyres with the described method, if the spikes on old tyres are already too short. (Don't throw away the old spikes, sort it by length and keep it, you will need it later for repairs or tyres where the surface is already worn down!)

Depending on the version, there are not all holes open in a new Michelin MS 89. About 1/3 of the spike-positions are only marked, but not drilled. You can simple drill in the missing holes for further enhancement of the tyre! Use a wooden piece on the drill-shaft to have an exact depht and to avoid drilling through!

On all raids, where I had prepared tyres like described, I was very satisfied with the adhesion on ice! Also the durability is ok, I lost only one spike per tyre per raid (as an average).

regards Gerhard SSSF
